The impact of Artificial Intelligence on education, and everyday practices

The recent International Artificial Intelligence Forum (FIIA 2023) addressed critical issues related to education and employment in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). One of the standout panels, titled «Prompting: The Art of Questioning,» featured three experts: Doménica Parada from AWS, Nicolás Surijon from DirMOD, and Astrid de Herrera from Ticmas. These experts explored how AI is changing the paradigm of problem-solving through interactions and questions directed at AI.

Previously, we have witnessed AI transform how we generate content. In adjusting the tone and style of an article, it took two iterations of instructions for AI to provide a satisfactory result. This is relevant because it reflects the essence of what was discussed on the panel: interacting with AI.

Doménica Parada from AWS noted that this shift aligns with a trend that has been underway for the past few decades: a shift from the traditional role of the teacher to that of a mediator in the learning process, where the student takes on a more active role. This breaks away from the old model where the teacher was the ultimate authority who taught, and students merely responded to their teachings. Now, the key to teaching is learning through questions, and these questions must be meaningful and profound.

Astrid De Herrera from Ticmas supported this idea, emphasizing the importance of questions, especially those that begin with «why.» These essential questions allow for a more curious and engaged approach to education, which is nothing new, as Socrates practiced it centuries ago.

Nicolás Surijon, CEO of DirMOD, compared the ongoing transformation to the revolution brought about by the advent of the Internet. He argued that we are entering a world where skills, especially creativity, will be crucial, and the gap between education and work is narrowing.

Artificial intelligence has become central to our daily lives, and questioning has become the key tool for addressing modernity. So much so that a new profession has emerged, the «Prompter Engineer,» responsible for interacting with AI. This engineer is a language expert who understands AI, representing a significant advancement in human-machine interaction.

Surijon highlighted that the way questions are posed to AI is not as important as the desired outcome. Conversing with AI is an iterative and repetitive process, and finding a clear and articulate voice is essential without losing sight of genuine human communication.

This new approach could also be likened to the role of a tutor in education, providing students with access to a teacher 24/7. This facilitates asking questions that they might not dare to pose in a traditional classroom, perhaps due to shyness or fear of judgment.

In the end, this transformation reconnects us with the foundation of the educational process, which is socialization and communication. Teaching through questions plays a fundamental role in developing effective communication skills. Furthermore, the importance of communication is reflected in surveys of human resources managers in the United States, where communication is ranked as the most important skill when hiring someone.

In summary, the International Artificial Intelligence Forum underscores the importance of asking questions in both education and the workplace. As these two spaces converge, the ability to ask questions becomes a crucial factor. We are rediscovering the essence of socialization and communication, where asking questions becomes the path to a promising future.
